A local family’s dream has come true.
With her four children by her side, on Friday, hardworking single mom Lynn Bassett unlocked the door to their brand new home at 125 Donald Street in Belleville at a special Habitat For Humanity ceremony.
Basset says she is mixed with emotions as she thanked the hundreds of volunteers who worked to build the home in six months.
“These are the kinds of memories that we are going to have that will last forever,” a grateful and tearful Bassett expressed to a large gathering of staff, volunteers, dignitaries, donors and board members. “Without you this wouldn’t be happening.”
Vice Chair for Habitat For Humanity Jill Raycroft says it was an incredibly moving experience to personally hand over the keys to the Basset family.
“Habitat is pleased to present Lynn and her children with a place to call home,” said Bob Clute, Habitat for Humanity Executive Director. “Each of them have been working hard to achieve their 500 hours of sweat equity. The dedication is the perfect opportunity to show the volunteers, donors, sponsors and the community as a whole the impact they have on local families when they support Habitat. I am so proud that our community can come together to make these life-changing events a possibility.”
Clute said hundreds of local volunteers including members of 8-Wing CFB Trenton helped out in the build. Volunteers came from as far as New Zealand and the United States.
Now in its 23rd year, Prince Edward Hastings Habitat for Humanity has built 26 homes throughout the region with five more coming soon.
