The anniversary celebrations continue in Prince Edward County.
Just a few short weeks after celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday, The County will mark the 225th anniversary of its founding on July 16 with a community picnic at the Crystal Palace in Picton.
“The County has always been a special place – home to Indigenous Peoples, visited by Samuel de Champlain, refuge for Loyalist settlers fleeing the American Revolution, and centre of a bustling agricultural and maritime community,” said Mayor Robert Quaiff. “The 225th anniversary offers us an exciting opportunity to reflect on our remarkable past and celebrate what the future holds for our rich and vibrant community.”
The Canada 150 and Prince Edward County 225 Celebration Ad Hoc Committee invites community members to bring their picnic lunches to the grounds of the Crystal Palace (375 Picton Main St.) beginning at 1 p.m. There will be live music until 2 p.m., followed by the unveiling of a special barn quilt designed to commemorate the 225th anniversary.
The committee will also launch the “225 Reasons Why We Love the County” legacy photo project. A large group photo will be staged at 2:10 p.m. to kick off the project. Cupcakes will be available on a first come, first served basis at 2:30 p.m.
Following the picnic, the community can continue to celebrate The County’s 225th anniversary in a number of different ways. The ad hoc committee suggests:
* Hosting a “Come Home to The County” reunion or event
* Planting a legacy tree or shrub
* Visiting museums in The County and attending local events
* Creating a time capsule
* Submitting a photo for the legacy project
* Using #PEC225 on social media to share events and reasons why you love The County
