Legal negotiations began this week in Detroit regarding the near-million dollars owed to Hastings County by a former Belleville businessman.
Earlier this month Hastings County took new steps to serve Jim Sinclair with documents, hired a lawyer in Detroit, and the “examination” hearing was held this week.
Sinclair, who faced jail time if he didn’t appear, did show up.
Hastings county CAO Jim Pine says Sinclair owes $750,000 in environmental fines.
Pine says the provincial offences committee is doing its best to collect that money.
The fines levied against Sinclair and his companies, Demolition and Recycling Inc. and Thermosets Ltd are for environmental charges related to excavations at the former Bakelite property in Belleville’s east end.
