Quinte Health Care hospitals have been running above capacity for quite some time.
At Tuesday night’s board meeting, trustees were updated on the pressures at BGH, Trenton Memorial and the Prince Edward site.
Officials says from January 1st to March 15th, the general medicine units were running with more patients than beds.
Board member David MacKinnon says it is not just locally, but a systemic problem across Canada and the world.
MacKinnon told the board that because technology is helping people live longer, they are also running into more ailments.
Chief of Staff Doctor Dick Zoutman says the pressures are mounting on the system.
Chief Nursing Officer Carol Smith Romeril says they looked at that moving forward, including in their recently approved budget.
Belleville General is routinely run at 117 percent capacity.
