Belleville’s mayor says municipalities could stand to lose employees if they put a “freeze” on salaries such as the province is suggesting. Mayor Neil Ellis was commenting on Premier Dalton McGuinty’s statement that municipalities should consider adopting a pay freeze for its workers….similar to what Ontario has put in its budget.. But Mayor Ellis says the city could lose employees since it pays less than private enterprise. Mayor Ellis also pointed out that salaries for emergency workers such as police and fire, are settled by arbitration…a provincial agency.
