A crushing start to the new year for a Quinte West councillor.
A two-alarm fire broke out in a barn at the farm of Jim Harrison at 187 Harrison Road at midnight.
Fire Chief John Whalen says firefighters from Murray and Batawa attended, and the large structure collapsed shortly after they arrived. He doesn’t know how many cattle were in the barn, and he expects personnel to be on the scene until at least noon.
The chief doesn’t have a damage estimate or cause, and says the investigation will continue today. Harrison told our newsroom he believes he lost five calves, but won’t know how many animals were in the barn until later today.
