A Belleville councillor wants the province to back-off applying its proposed harmonized sales tax to electricity.
Ontario is expected to implement the new tax July first next year, increasing electricity rates by eight-percent. Councillor Garnet Thompson told City Council that since customers must pay-off the the “stranded debt” of Ontario Hydro, then they shouldn’t have to pay the extra sales tax. Council supported a resolution that calls on the province to make electricity exempt, at least until the debt is paid off.
