Local Paper Mill workers are headed to Ottawa tomorrow, joining a rally drawing attention to the crisis in forestry, pulp and paper.
Three buses with Norampac and Sonoco employees and members of the public will leave the Trenton Holiday Inn at 7-30 in the morning, going to the federal Minister of Natural Resources Office.
Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union local 14-89 President Brian Wannamaker says the situation is bleak at mills right across Canada, with 55-thousand layoffs over the past two years.
There weren’t any job reductions at Sonoco, but over 100 people were laid off at Norampac for several months.
A spokesperson for Northumberland-Quinte West MP Rick Norlock says this is the first they’ve heard of the protest by local paperworkers. Norlock won’t be greeting the protestors in Ottawa tomorrow but is willing to meet with them in his office at any time.
