The City of Quinte West and the City of Belleville are inviting residents to give household items a second life during upcoming fall Giveaway Days, happening the weekend of Oct. 17 and 18.
Scheduled for the weekend before Waste Reduction Week (Oct. 19-25, 2026), Giveaway Days offer community members an easy, cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to divert usable items from local landfills while helping neighbours find pre-loved treasures for free.
Quinte West and Belleville residents can place unwanted items in good condition at the curb or roadside in front of their homes and clearly label them as free.
Printable “free” signs can be found on both municipalities’ Giveaway Days webpages.
Items not intended for the event should be kept separate and away from the curb.
Put giveaway items curbside beginning at 8 a.m. on each day and bring any unclaimed items back inside by 8 p.m.
Appropriate items to give away include:
- CDs and DVDs
- Books
- Furniture and home decor
- Small appliances and kitchen items
- Construction materials, such as hardware, lumber and drywall
Health Canada’s Consumer Product Safety Directorate advises against giving away cribs, car seats, strollers, bath seats and playpens.
“Curbside Giveaway Days are a great example of how small actions can make a big difference in our community,” said City of Quinte West Mayor Jim Harrison. “Giving unwanted items a second life keeps usable materials out of the landfill, reduces waste and helps make Quinte West a more sustainable place to live.”
“Giveaways Days are a simple way our community can come together to reduce landfill waste by giving unwanted items a new life,” said City of Belleville Mayor Neil Ellis. “It’s a great opportunity to clear out items you no longer need while giving someone else the chance to put them to good use.”
