A fire in Quinte West on Monday evening is now flirting with one million dollars in damage.
Around 8:00 p.m., Quinte West fire crews responded to 871 English Settlement Road in Murray Ward, west of County Road 40 for a home engulfed.
Fire Chief John Whelan tells Quinte News the home was engulfed when they arrived.
“Most of the morning yesterday (Tuesday), we brought in actually an excavator to help put out some hot spots, but a large home, over 4,000 square foot. The individual living there had been doing ongoing renovations. What we determined was he was working on some pipes in the basement and one of the embers from the torch had gotten in behind the wall.”
Whalen says in older homes the combustible wood and insulation makes for a quicker spread of the blaze.
The crews had the blaze put down in the early morning Tuesday, however it reignited around 5:00 a.m., forcing crews back to the scene.
