Kingston police have laid a charge following an investigation into online comments alleged to promote hatred against identifiable groups.
The investigation began after a complaint was received regarding comments posted on a social media platform on September 23.
Police say the comments were posted anonymously, and directed at members of religious communities and contained language that is alleged to encourage hatred and violence toward identifiable groups.
After further investigation, a 37-year-old Kingston resident has been charged with public incitement of hatred, and held for bail hearing.
Police say hate-related offences are taken seriously, and allegations of this nature will be thoroughly investigated.
“Everyone deserves to feel safe in our community regardless of their religion, ethnicity, culture, or background. Statements that promote hatred or violence against others have no place in our community. Hate-motivated behaviour undermines the values of respect, inclusion, and dignity that strengthen our community and will not be tolerated. Kingston police encourage anyone who witnesses or experiences hate-motivated incidents, whether in person or online, to report them to police.
As the matter is now before the courts, no further details will be released at this time.
