Prince Edward County Mayor Steve Ferguson issued the following statement regarding the shooting outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville:
I was shocked and saddened by news of the shooting outside of the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville yesterday evening.
Our thoughts are with members of Belleville’s Jewish community during this deeply troubling time. Our thoughts are also with Belleville police officer Const. Jeff Smith and his family during his recovery.
All people have the right to gather and practise their religion in a safe and protected environment. Senseless violence like this most recent act has no place in our society and must be denounced.
On behalf of County Council and residents of Prince Edward County, we stand in solidarity and support with our neighbours in Belleville and the Quinte region.
