Police have released the names of both the shooter and an injured police officer after Sunday night’s shooting outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue.
In a press event, Belleville Police Deputy Chief Sheri Meeks provided an update on the state of the investigation. She was joined by Kristy Denette, an investigator from the Ontario Special Investigations Unit. The SIU previously invoked its mandate to investigate, due to a police officer firing their weapon, and are currently leading the investigation at the scene.
In their update, they confirmed that the shooter is 29-year-old Sean Ward from Quinte West. He remains at the hospital in a life-threatening condition. The officer who was shot and injured was named as Constable Jeff Smith, who sustained serious injuries and is currently in stable condition.
While the investigation is still underway, some details about the shooting were confirmed. Constable Smith was present at the synagogue when Ward arrived. Ward then opened fire on Constable Smith with a shotgun, before Constable Smith returned fire. Another officer also arrived on scene during the incident, who also fired their weapon. Overall, between 20 and 30 shots were fired during the confrontation. Surrounding homes, vehicles, and the synagogue were all struck by shots.
Deputy Chief Meeks condemned the attack, while reassuring residents that there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
“We recognize the concern and uncertainty many may be feeling, particularly given that this occurred near the Sons of Jacob Synagogue during one of the holiest days in the Jewish faith,” said Deputy Chief Meeks. “Let me be very clear: antisemitism, hate, and violence have no place in our community. Every person deserves to feel safe when attending a place of worship, gathering with loved ones, or participating in community life.”
The area around the synagogue remains locked down by officers from Belleville and neighbouring police services who have come to assist. Belleville police are maintaining a heightened police presence throughout the city, including around places of worship.
