The Edmonton Oilers have officially signed forward Alex Formenton to a one-year, $850,000 contract.
The 26-year-old winger returns to North America after spending recent seasons playing in Switzerland.
Formenton previously spent parts of three seasons with the AHL’s Belleville Senators, where he skated in 76 career games.
His hockey career hit a major standstill following allegations connected to the 2018 Hockey Canada World Junior team.
Formenton was one of five players charged in a high-profile sexual assault case stemming from a 2018 gala in London, Ontario.
However, Formenton and his co-defendants were formally acquitted of all criminal charges.
While the NHL reinstated the players, Formenton was the sole individual cleared for immediate reinstatement by an independent Hockey Canada appeal board.
With his legal and administrative hurdles cleared, the speedster will now look to earn a permanent spot on Edmonton’s roster.
