“Roofing projects, Bayside Secondary School, PECI, Hermon. We’ve had telephone and network upgrades in our schools, yearly inspections, septic systems, fire protection systems have all taken place over the summer.”
MacIver says there are quite a few ongoing projects as well.
“Septic upgrades continue: Birds Creek and Coe Hill, and a Harmony project that you were made aware of for a while now. Eastside, there’s a new congregated classroom and some internal renovations there that will continue on into the new year. Susanna Moodie, the parking and playground updates continue. We hope to have our paving done prior to the first day of school. PECI, the learning commons also will continue into the new school year.”
Windows, brickwork, HVAC systems and more made up the work at 20 buildings across the board.
A capital priorities project application was been submitted to the Minister of Education.
The province did not approve it at this time, however, MacIver says they will continue to resubmit, knowing it will have to be done in the near future.
MacIver points to a recent boundary review, as well as the population growth going on in the area, as the reasons.
There are also plans for expansion north of Hwy 401, with a major infrastructure being planned around Harmony Public.
“As we start to see that growth move further north of Highway 401, it is an area that will need some service. It’s something that we keep an eye on, monitor progress, monitor permissions. I think Harmony is, as a result of our boundary review, is in a good spot as far as being able to support additional students. We do have some septic system work that will will happen there. For a while, we were waiting to see if the infrastructure would flow far enough north in enough time. It doesn’t appear that that will be on the horizon, so we need to take some steps just to upgrade that system at Harmony.”
Developers are asking for official plan and zoning amendments that would eventually allow the construction of over 3,000 residential units, resort accommodations, and recreational facilities on 370 hectares of land on Harmony Road.
The development would take decades to complete but phase one would involve land on the south end of the property.
The developers have held several public information sessions in the past.
