Something unusual will occur at a regular meeting of Belleville City Council on Monday.
Consultants will present a study on what future development charges should be for the next 10 years and it’s suggested they be lower than they are right now.
Currently, for new single-family and semi-detached homes, the development charge in Belleville’s urban area totals just over $32,000 per unit.
Consultants will propose a charge of $28,300 on those homes going forward.
That’s 12 per cent lower.
The provincial government, in a concerted push to build more housing in Ontario, has changed, several times in recent years, how development charges can be levied.
Developers pay the charges to municipalities to defray the cost of their projects on added municipal services such as fire, police, parks and recreation, and ambulance.
Council meets at 4 o’clock on Monday afternoon at City Hall.
