Local author, therapist, and relationship expert Dr. Julie Gowthorpe, a frequent contributor to Mix 97, is preparing for the release of her second book.
Distributed in Canada by Raincoast Books, Heal Childhood Trauma offers readers practical guidance for understanding how early experiences can continue to shape adult relationships, self-worth, emotional responses, and patterns of behaviour.
Drawing on Dr. Gowthorpe’s extensive clinical experience, the book is intended to help readers recognize these patterns and develop healthier ways of responding to themselves and others.
“It came from years of doing trauma work and recognizing that some people have big ‘T’ trauma like combat trauma, that’s a big ‘T’ trauma or an assault as an adult but many people have what are smaller ‘T’ traumas. So, things that changed their sense of safety and security in the world. And so that’s what the book is for, all those people that realize their interactions with the world now are not what they want them to be and they want to change that.”
She hopes the book will help readers better understand the lasting effects of childhood experiences to have better adult relationships, in marriages, friendships and work.
“So many problems people come to therapy with that they say oh, I’ve got a problem in this relationship, I’ve got all these difficulties. That when we delve deeper into that self-awareness and helping them understand what’s going on, why are they activating the way they are, why are they responding in the way they are? We have to be able to figure out, how do I soothe that myself?”
Dr. Gowthorpe is a well-known therapist, speaker and media contributor based in Belleville.
It will be available in stores October 6, 2026.
