Marmora and Lake Council will appoint a candidate to fill its councillor vacancy.
Jane Lakatos resigned earlier this month leaving just four members of council.
In a social media statement Lakatos stated, “I am unable in good conscience to continue in a role where I have witnessed due process set aside – undermining the integrity of local government. This is not about any single vote or motion. Good governance is about an unwavering commitment to doing things the right way, every time, for everyone.”
Council accepted the staff recommendation to appoint a candidate from the 2022 municipal election to the seat at Tuesday’s meeting.
There were five other candidates who ran for council in 2022 and were unsuccessful.
Alex Angus was the next candidate with the most votes in 2022 followed by Bernie Donaldson, Jason Carman, Sue Connelly and Launy Schwartz.
The city clerk was to begin contacting the candidates in their order of finish.
At Tuesday’s meeting, Mayor Jan O’Neil issued a statement on the matter, thanking Lakatos for her service.
O’Neil said while council respects her decision it rejects any suggestion that it collectively or individually failed to conduct its business properly.
“The municipality remains focused on serving residents and advancing the priorities of the community. Council stands fully behind the integrity of its decision-making processes and the professionalism, dedication and expertise of municipal staff.”
Any appointment will be short-lived as the next municipal election is on October 25.
So far no candidates have filed papers to run for mayor, deputy mayor or council.
