The Belleville Police Service is celebrating their 190th anniversary.
During a ceremony outside the police station, Inspector Rene Aubertin raised a commemorative flag in honour of the milestone. The flag was raised to half mast, in respect for a recent OPP officer and Toronto Police officer who both lost their lives recently in the line of duty.
Multiple people spoke about the importance of local policing during the ceremony, including Belleville Police Chief Murray Rodd, Mayor Neil Ellis and MPP Tyler Allsopp.
While talking to Quinte News Chief Rodd said that looking back over the service’s recent history, the new police station on Sidney Street stands out as a major accomplishment, which was a culmination of efforts by multiple chiefs.
“It was Chief Callahan who closed the deal, delivered this to the community and the members,” said Chief Rodd. “That was the first of the 190 years that they actually occupied a space that was designed and built fit for purpose to support the men and women striving to keep the community safe.”
He also said that the Belleville Police Service will keep adapting to whatever challenges the future may bring.
“We’re just going to continue to commit to excellence, train our people, support our people, and enable our people to succeed and meet what the world dishes out on a daily basis,” said Chief Rodd.
The commemorative flag will fly outside the police station for the remainder of the year.
