Flora Sonneveld has been selected to receive a $120,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship to study Engineering at McMaster University. Graduating from Bayside Secondary School, Flora will be entering Engineering I this Fall.
Flora was selected by teacher Erin Rose for her outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements, making history as the first nominee to win a Schulich Leader Scholarship at Bayside Secondary School.
Reflecting on the achievement, Flora shared:
“Being selected as a recipient of this scholarship is truly life-changing. It is difficult to describe the realization that such significant financial stress has been lifted for my family and I – it’s surreal. This support will allow me to centre my focus on studying engineering, and my goals to contribute to the future of nuclear energy. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to join the community of Schulich Leaders at McMaster.”
What distinguishes Flora for such a prestigious honor is her combination of intellectual curiosity and a tangible drive to make a difference. Beyond her academic excellence, Flora has left a lasting impact at Bayside Secondary School. She competed on six school sports teams, was a valued member of the yearbook committee and the Student Voice group, and dedicated her time to welcoming international students and guiding them through their transition to high school in Canada.
Flora’s receipt of this award is a significant accomplishment for both her and the school. Her achievement serves as a powerful example to the student body, demonstrating that dedication to academics, extracurriculars and the school community can truly shape their futures.
About the Schulich Leader Scholarships
Every year, every high school in Canada can submit one Schulich Leader Nominee based on academic excellence in STEM, entrepreneurial leadership, and financial need. A total of 100 scholarships are awarded nationwide: 50 engineering scholarships valued at $120,000 each and 50 science, technology, or math scholarships valued at $100,000 each.
The $200 million scholarship fund was established in 2012 by businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich to encourage Canada’s brightest students to become the next generation of entrepreneurial-minded technology innovators.
“We are pleased to recognize Flora as a Schulich Leader, part of a growing network of scholars. Their entrepreneurial drive will strengthen STEM innovation,” says Judy Schulich, President of The Schulich Foundation.
