The first boat has left Picton Terminals, the first agri-shipment out of the port in 75 years.
Last month, the lake freighter Ontario Venture took its maiden voyage, loaded with a shipment of wheat and soybeans from Picton Bay.
Canadian agribusiness Parrish & Heimbecker sent a load of 23,000 metric tons from their new location in The County to Quebec City.
John Grech is with Picton Terminals and says the first marine voyage was four years in the making.
“The agriculture sector is absolutely thrilled to have the facility here. Getting their product to global markets now is much easier having a marine facility right there at Picton.”
“A lot of this product would have gone to either Johnstown or Oshawa or would have gone to the Trenton elevator, which also belongs to Parrish and Heimbecker. Having a facility right on the water helps facilitate global shipping much easier.”
Grech says the goal now is to schedule outgoing agri-shipments, with incoming shipments of other products and materials.
