A local MP has tabled a number of petitions to the House of Commons calling on the federal government to immediately halt the Alto high-speed rail project.
In the house on Thursday, Hastings-Lennox and Addington-Tyendinaga MP Shelby Kramp-Neuman says the petitions were signed by thousands of concerned constituents.
“They cite a number of very legitimate concerns, including heavy-handed expropriation, dividing up communities with no level crossing, the proposed costs and the questionable benefits the project offers,” MP Kramp-Neuman told the House of Commons.
She thanked her constituents for bringing the concerns to her office.
The high-speed rail network under development would connect Quebec City to Toronto.
At the preliminary stage, working assumptions place the cost of a high-speed rail network at between $60 billion and $90 billion.
Alto notes on its website that the estimates are for planning purposes only and should not be considered as a project budget.
A number of anti-Alto meetings have taken place across the region expressing concerns about the project.
Another one is set to take place at the Gerry Masterson Community Centre in Corbyville on May 13.
In a post to social media, MP Kramp-Neuman provided a link to an e-petition calling for the halt of the Alto high-speed rail project.
