The Belleville Police Service Board will see numerous staff reports as part of an overall 2025 annual report at its
meeting Thursday.
Below are some highlights.
2025 saw a continuation of a multi-year trend of increasing calls for service for Belleville police.
A total of 32,662 calls of various kinds were dealt with. That compares to 28,593 in 2024.
Not surprisingly, the increase in calls resulted in an increase in the number of reported crimes.
Last year 4,699 crimes were reported to the service, an increase from 2024’s total of 4,005.
In 2023, 4,243 reported crimes were handled by the service.
The number of complaints against the Belleville Police Service in 2025 totalled 48.
According to the annual report, that works out to a 0.14% complaint rate when compared to the year’s calls for service total of 32,662.
There were 43 complaints in 2024.
A commentary on the 2025 numbers from the police service is below.
“This low percentage reflects the high standard of professionalism and quality of policing consistently delivered by our members.”
The Drugs and Intelligence Unit made a dent in the illegal drug trade in 2025.
Last year there were 17 investigations leading to 77 people being charged with a total of 332 offenses.
It’s estimated the value of the illegal drugs seized by officers was $392,000, up from $300,000 in 2024.
The amount of cash seized last year was $172,000, up considerably from $54,000 the year before.
Over the past four years, almost $1.3 million worth of narcotics were seized.
The Belleville Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Division was involved in 836 new investigations in 2025, a few more than in 2024.
The division includes two administration staff and eight Detective Constables and the length of the investigations ranges from days to weeks to months to years.
Its Forensic Identification Unit, which is responsible for fingerprints and DNA evidence, was involved in 205
incidents.
There were more investigations involving weapons, drugs, robbery, assault, and sexual assault in 2025 than
the year before while break-and-enter investigations were fewer.
The service’s Tech Crime Unit handled 90 investigations in 2025, 11 of those on behalf of other police services.
There was a significant increase in the number of cell phones examined by the unit at 188, up from 147 in 2024.
The Belleville Police Service continued on a growth trend in 2025.
Twenty-three people were hired last year, six sworn officers and 17 civilians.
This brought the service’s staffing to 104 sworn officers and 84 civilians.
There were nine departures from the service, four resignations, two expiring contracts, two retirements, and one termination.
There was a good demand for constable jobs last year with 116 applications for the far fewer positions advertised.
