Staff with the City of Belleville will be taking another look at a by-law regarding green space along South John Street.
The by-law was pulled by Councillor Kathryn Brown during Monday’s meeting of Belleville City Council.
Councillor Brown was seeking to have staff evaluate the process used for that property and consider whether there is a way to address neighborhood-wide benefits.
The by-law would have declared the green space along South John Street, and across Harbour Drive from Jane Forester Park, surplus to the city’s needs, and transfer the property to the owners of a neighbouring land.
No compensation is begin sought, with the city assigning it a value of $0.
In a recorded vote, the motion to refer it to staff narrowly passed, 5-4.
Votes in favour included councillors Margaret Seu, Kathryn Brown, Paul Carr, Barbara Enright-Miller and Mayor Neil Ellis.
No votes came from councillors Garnet Thompson, Lisa-Anne Chatten, Kelly Henderson, and Sean Kelly.
