The City of Quinte West has announced that it will send representatives to attend the 2026 Good Roads conference in Toronto.
The city has secured a delegation with the Ministry of Transportation to discuss four key infrastructure and transportation priorities.
These include the following:
Highway 401 expansion
- City representatives will request an update on provincial timelines for the Highway 401 expansion in Eastern Ontario, including the sequencing of work in Quinte West.
County Road 40 bridge replacement
- County Road 40 is a vital transportation corridor connecting Highway 401 to Prince Edward County. The city is proceeding with plans to replace the bridge and is seeking provincial funding support for the project.
VIA Rail service in Eastern Ontario
- City representatives will advocate for the permanent retention and enhancement of VIA Rail service along the Cornwall-to-Toronto corridor. Quinte West is seeking to partner with the province to engage the federal government and emphasize the importance of maintaining service along this corridor, including the Trenton junction.
Provincial highway downloading
- City representatives will raise concerns regarding the long-term impacts of provincial highway downloads to municipalities. Since these transfers, municipalities have faced ongoing challenges in maintaining former provincial highways, which are often used by non-local traffic and serve as detour routes during Highway 401 closures.
The 2026 Good Roads Conference will take place from March 29 to April 1.
