Plans are in the works for a portable classroom to be placed in Macaulay Village Park in Prince Edward County.
Two delegations, one from the county’s Department of Illumination and the other from Macaulay Village Park Group,
described what will be an indoor recreation, arts, and learning space operating 12 months a year at a meeting of county council’s Committee of the Whole Thursday.
Currently there is no indoor space in the park and residents
in the densely populated neighborhood have supported the idea after being surveyed.
Several other organizations are involved and $70,000 has already been raised with another $100,000 to be raised for installation and operating costs for one year.
The groups have asked council to declare the portable classroom to be
a Project of Community Interest to help them raise more money in the form of grants.
Council will see a staff report on details regarding such a declaration next month but everyone on the committee expressed their enthusiastic support for the proposal.
It’s hoped the portable classroom and associated solar
panels and a backup generator will be ready for programming
to begin in the fall.
