OPP respond to approximately 87 mental health or suicide calls every day.
These situations are deeply complex and often require more than a traditional police response.
During Social Work Week, they are recognizing the vital work happening throughout the organization to better support community members in crisis.
Trained mental health and addictions crisis workers are embedded into each of the OPP Provincial Communication Centres.
These specialists provide real-time crisis deescalation and support to consenting callers.
At the local level, Mobile Crisis Response Teams are embedded at detachments across the province.
They play an important role, bringing together a police officer and trained crisis worker to respond to calls together.
