It is Snowmobile Safety Week across Ontario.
As winter recreation picks up in Prince Edward County, Ontario Provincial Police with the Prince Edward County detachment are providing reminders for local riders and visitors to operate their snowmobiles safely, responsibly, and within the law.
Police provided the following tips and reminders:
Before You Ride
- Carry a valid driver’s licence or MSVOL
- Have proof of insurance and registration
- Display a valid trail permit when required
- Wear an approved helmet (drivers, passengers, and anyone in towed devices)
- Check trail, weather, and ice conditions before heading out
- Tell someone your route and expected return time
While Riding
- Stay on designated trails
- Obey posted signs and come to a full stop before crossing roads
- Never ride on private property without permission
- Adjust speed to conditions – maximum 50 km/h on trails
- Zero tolerance for impaired riding
Millennium Trail – Winter Use Reminders
- Motorized use is restricted to snowmobiles, farm tractors, and animal husbandry vehicles
- ATVs and dirt bikes are not permitted during winter conditions
- Snowmobile speed limits apply
- The trail is not maintained for pedestrian use in winter; icy sections may be present
- Parking lots and access points are not plowed
- Winter restrictions remain until snow has melted and trail conditions stabilize
