The Seniors Association Kingston Region is inviting the community to help shape the future of its flagship building as it celebrates 50 years of service and 25 years at 56 Francis Street. This year, the association is exploring a new name for its building, currently known as The Seniors Centre, to better reflect the vibrant, welcoming community hub it has become. The goal is to examine names that invite participation, partnership, and pride from everyone who walks through its doors.
Why the change and why now?
Nicki Long, Communications Director, explains: “The term ‘Seniors Centre’ has served the association well for many years, but we’d like to consider a modern name that can help break down stereotypes, encourage participation from a broader audience, and reflect the dynamic programs and services we offer. An anniversary is the perfect time to reflect and plan.”
She adds, “Over my 18 years working for the association, we have encountered many people who have misunderstood who can join and what we offer. Some avoid joining because they don’t see themselves as seniors, while others assume membership starts at 65 and wait—when in fact programs are geared to 50+. Still others expect a retirement home instead of the lively, active community centre we are. It’s sometimes sad that we could have helped someone sooner, and that’s why considering this change matters.”
What’s changing and what’s not:
The official organization name—Seniors Association Kingston Region—will remain unchanged. They will continue to serve older adults in 12 locations throughout Kingston and region and offer the same programs and services you know and love. A new building name for the 56 Francis location simply expands their identity to reflect how the space is used today and in the future.
“Community feedback is essential in this process,” Executive Director Don Amos says. “We invite members, partners, and residents to share their opinions of the names we are suggesting.” The names under consideration are: Active Living Centre, AgeWise Community Centre, Lifelong Learning Centre, AgeWell Community Centre, Thrive Community Centre, or remain as The Seniors Centre.
The community will have until February 13, 2026 to complete the anonymous survey at SeniorsKingston.ca/Events/935 or drop by The Seniors Centre and fill out a form in person. After reviewing feedback, the board will make a final decision.
