Ontario Provincial Police say that approximately 50 vehicles were involved in a series of multi-vehicle collisions on Highway 401 between Belleville and Brighton Tuesday morning.
Quinte News learned that one crash in the eastbound lanes involved 17 vehicles.
There was near zero visibility in the area at the time.
“Officers responded quickly, along with other emergency personnel to assess any potential injuries,” Sgt. Erin Cranton with OPP East Region said in a video to social media.
“We are so thrilled to report that thankfully, there were no serious or fatal, injuries as a result of this collision today.”
Cranton says it is a reminder of how important it is to slow down and give space between you and the vehicle in front of you.
“The continued efforts for cleanup go beyond us. You know, fire, ambulance, tow trucks, everybody is involved in getting this collision cleared up.”
The westbound lanes of Highway 401 between Brighton and Belleville were closed for most of the day and have since reopened.
The eastbound lanes remained closed as of 4:00pm.
