A program manager with the South East Health Unit says there have been no reports of illness related to a Belleville restaurant that has been closed.
The health unit closed North China Buffet after an online video showed an individual removing items from a dumpster outside of the restaurant.
Bill Sherlock says they’ve spoken with the person who posted the video.
The incident appears to have happened after health inspectors completed a routine inspection.
“So we do routine inspections. Three times a year we’ll reinspect. So this was part of our ongoing investigation earlier that we’ve identified some refrigeration issues with that particular restaurant so we ordered them to discard the food.”
Sherlock adds they are working under the Health Protection Promotion Act.
“So, under that act, we can issue, if we see a health violation, we would issue what’s called a Section 13 order and require them to take immediate action. We can close them and require action for them to take before reopening and that’s what we’ve done in this particular circumstance.”
The restaurant will remain closed until a full reinspection determines it is safe to reopen.
Sherlock says anyone who was recently at the restaurant and is experiencing symptoms of foodborne illness should contact the South East Health Unit at 613-966-5500 ext 677.
