The Trenton Golden Hawks find themselves in a good place heading into their final round robin game at the National Junior A Championship in Calgary (Centennial Cup).
David Fournier, Aaron Brown, and Taeo Artichuk each had two points to lead the Golden Hawks to a 5-2 win against the Greater Sudbury Cubs on Monday.
Fournier spoke to Quinte News following the game and says when it was tied 2-2 after 40, they came together in the intermission.
He says they were focused and had a strong game plan heading into the third.
“Get some speed, get some pucks deep, and get the next goal and then everything put itself in place and that’s exactly what happened. Got two quick goals.”
He says following their loss on Friday afternoon they had the entire weekend off and they got away from the attention of the tournament.
“Over the weekend we went to Dylan Woulds’s (Trenton forward) house. He lives near our hotel in Calgary. It was good to get away from the rink and get some good bonding as a team.”
With a regulation or overtime win, or a loss in extra time, Trenton will guarantee themselves a spot in the quarter finals on Friday. They still also have a shot at a bye into the semifinals, if they win their division.
Fournier says they are taking it one step at a time.
“We’re just going shift by shift, not focused on the standings and everything, just get the three points.”
The Grand Prairie (Alberta) Storm and Trenton meet Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. EST.
There is a watch party at the Duncan McDonald Memorial Community Gardens Hall. Admission is $2.
