Prince Edward County’s planning and development committee has recommended council approve zoning for a controversial new event space.
During Wednesday’s meeting, the committee reviewed a zoning application for a property owned by Councillor Sam Grosso. Due to the conflict of interest, Councillor Grosso recused himself from this part of the meeting.
The property, at 3038 Rednersville Road, was up to be rezoned to allow an event venue on the property. The plans call for the venue to be inside a renovated barn on the property.
Over 30 local residents spoke in public comments, with the majority opposing the zoning application.
Concerns raised by the public focused primarily on noise from the venue disrupting surrounding residents. Other concerns included additional traffic, and sanitation concerns with potential threats to local water quality.
A handful of local musicians also spoke during comments, offering their support to the project.
After public comment, committee members briefly debated the proposed zoning change. Councillor Bill Roberts supported the application, pointing out that there are plans to address the concerns brought by residents.
“Staff also makes it quite clear in the report that they will undertake, through the site plan control, a further addressing of matters such as we’ve heard this evening: environment, servicing, traffic, and access,” said Councillor Roberts.
The committee voted to approve the zoning change, and sent the proposal to municipal council for final approval.
