Hastings Prince Edward District School Board is committed to improving student results in EQAO testing.
A report to the board at Monday’s meeting outlined the next steps of action.
The most recent EQAO results indicated a general decline in the number of HPE students acheiving the provincial standard in some areas of math, reading and writing, and underperforming in all areas in comparison to the province.
However, in math, there was a positive trend in schools previously targeted for improvement with a Math Achievement Action Plan.
Six of eight schools with such plans showed improvement in Grade 3 math and 14 of 16 showed improvement in Grade 6 math from 2022 EQAO results.
There was also a continued positive trend in percentages of students sustaining level 4 achievement across math, reading and writing, and grades.
The board will aim to foster positive learning environments, as student survey data reflects an overall trend of lower self-reported percentages of confidence among students in math, reading, and writing compared to the province.
Self-reported percentages of HPE students liking to read and write was also lower as was the number of students who believe they can get better at math.
The board recognizes that closing achievement gaps, especially for students with learning exceptionalities, requires continued focus on learning experiences that, among other things, promotes critical thinking and builds student confidence.
