A Brighton man thought a quick river crossing would help him evade being arrested by Belleville police Sunday but he was wrong.
An officer spotted a man on Station Street around 7 p.m. who was suspected of stealing from a Bell Boulevard business two days earlier.
The suspect was free on the condition that he was not be away from his Brighton home unless accompanied by his surety.
His surety was nowhere to be seen and the 57-year-old tried to avoid being arrested by crossing the Moira River.
However, another officer was ready on the other side to greet and arrest him.
