The Downtown Belleville Business Improvement Area (DBIA) is proud to announce the unveiling of its third mural of 2026, continuing its commitment to beautification, public art, and celebrating the rich history of Downtown Belleville.
The newest mural, titled Growth in Community, was created by artist Christopher Bennett, professionally known as Serna, and is located on the north exterior wall of Barber’s Flowers at 122 Front Street. He was joined by Mayor Neil Ellis, Councillor Garnet Thompson and Margaret Seu on behalf of the City of Belleville, Adam Bramburger on behalf of MPP Tyler Allsopp, Kevin Clarke on behalf of MP Chris Malette, Cristina Cadavid on behalf of the Belleville Chamber of Commerce, Danielle Furtado Executive Director of the DBIA and many members of the public who gathered to celebrate the new attraction.
The mural celebrates the importance of community, connection, and growth, themes that are deeply rooted in the history of the downtown core and particularly fitting for its location at one of Belleville’s long standing family businesses.
Barber’s Flowers has a remarkable history dating back to 1890, when S.S. Potter, the great-grandfather of current owner Anne McKinnon, first opened the business. More than 135 years later, the business remains in the family, representing generations of dedication, entrepreneurship, and commitment to the Belleville community.
The mural’s title, Growth in Community, serves as a fitting tribute to both the business’s longstanding roots and the continued evolution of Downtown Belleville. Just as Barber’s Flowers has grown alongside the community for generations, the downtown continues to flourish through the contributions of its local businesses, residents, and artists.
This project was made possible through funding received from the Rural Ontario Development (ROD) Grant, which has allowed the Downtown Belleville BIA to invest in beautification initiatives throughout the downtown core. These projects aim to enhance public spaces, celebrate local creativity, and create a more vibrant and welcoming environment for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
“Downtown Belleville is built on the strength of its local businesses and the generations of people who have helped shape our community,” said Danielle Furtado, Executive Director of the DBIA. “Through projects like this, we’re not only enhancing our downtown spaces but celebrating the stories and people that make Downtown Belleville what it is today.”
The unveiling marks the third of four murals completed in Downtown Belleville in 2026 as part of the BIA’s ongoing beautification efforts. Each mural brings a unique artistic perspective to the downtown, transforming building exteriors into colourful landmarks while contributing to the character and identity of the district.
The Downtown Belleville BIA extends its sincere appreciation to artist Christopher Bennett (Serna), Anne McKinnon and the Barber’s Flowers family for their involvement in bringing this project to life.
