The Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate after an incident in Whitby Saturday evening.
According to a release from the SIU, Durham Regional Police were called to the area of the Whitby Public Library at approximately 8 p.m. for reports of a woman in distress.
The report says there was “an interaction” and one officer discharged an Anti Riot Weapon ENField at the woman.
The woman did not sustain any serious injury and was taken to hospital for assessment.
Because the ARWEN is classified as a firearm, the SIU is investigating and is asking anyone with information to contact them.
