Residents along East Mary Street are asking council in Prince Edward County to look at a creek that runs behind the street following this year’s flooding.
Megan Smith made a deputation at Shire Hall during the Committee of the Whole meeting on Thursday afternoon and implored council do something about the infrastructure along the water body.
She said flooding is not normal and residents are dealing with swampy backyards, flooded basements and the smell of stagnant water.
The issue even prompted the residents along the street to create the “Proud Mary Residents Association” in an effort to have the problem dealt with.
Smith stated the lack of repair of the infrastructure is the main issue and by removing the culvert and restoring the levee, it will alleviate the issues property owners are seeing this year.
She said in 2017 there was also flooding, but it wasn’t as severe as the water wasn’t flooding basements.
Another resident of the street spoke and stated she is a holistic doctor and her business is at risk because she can’t have people with health problems coming to her home if she has a mold issue.
She stated her basement isn’t fully dry and mold isn’t an issue yet but it is a concern she has.
Another home owner was concerned about what it is doing to their property values.
Councillor Phil St-Jean has taken a look at the land in question and told those in chambers the situation hasn’t improved from the spring and they have no idea what they will see next year.
Councillor Brad Nieman asked for a report from staff where they investigate the situation as it is an ongoing issue and it needs to be addressed.
Council approved a motion asking staff to take a look at the issue and come back with a report in October.
