A Grafton man will be held in custody in a hospital after being found not criminally responsible for the murder of his mother and injuring of his stepfather after a violent knife attack on New Year’s Eve back in 2015.
Sixty-three-year-old Daniel Grant stabbed Dolores and John Byers at their Grafton home.
According to Northumberland News, Grant had been diagnosed with schizophrenia 14 years ago and had been under the care of the Ontario Review Board but was discharged in 2013 when he went off his medication.
In his recent decision a judge said he thought Grant had been seriously ill for a long time and could not be held responsible for knowing the New Year’s Eve attack was wrong.
Grant will not be allowed out of the hospital unless under supervision.
