Prince Edward County OPP and emergency services responded to a marine incident on East Lake on Saturday after a canoe capsized.
At around 12:45 p.m., officers received a call for service regarding a capsized canoe with two occupants entering the water.
With assistance from Prince Edward Fire and Rescue, and Emergency Medical Services, both occupants were safely removed from the water.
Police say both occupants were wearing life jackets when their canoe capsized, helping keep them afloat until they could be rescued.
OPP are reminding residents that with water temperatures continuing to drop at this time of year, the risk of cold-water shock and hypothermia increases, making it even more important to wear a properly fitted life jacket or personal flotation device whenever you are on the water.
They say a life jacket can make the difference between life and death in an emergency.
“While this incident had a positive outcome, it serves as an important reminder that emergencies on the water can happen unexpectedly,” OPP said in a release.
“This is a welcome reminder that taking a simple precaution can save a life. Always wear your life jacket when on the water.”
