Local police and the coroner are investigating following the death of a senior inmate at Warkworth Institution.
Correctional Service Canada announced today that 87-year-old Runo Mark Cairenius passed away in custody on Friday.
Cairenius had been serving a life sentence at the facility for more than three decades.
Federal corrections officials confirm his next of kin have been informed as they conduct an official administrative review.
