The Peterborough Police Service is among the people and organizations speaking out following Sunday evening’s shooting outside a Belleville synagogue.
The PPS issued a statement Monday morning:
“The events of Sunday, September 20, 2026 at a Belleville synagogue are difficult to hear, process and quite frankly, angering. While the details of the incident have not been widely made available, we want our community to know that we are aware that these events can be concerning and cut at our sense of safety.
I have had a conversation with the chief in Belleville to offer our support and of course relay our best wishes to their injured officer. I have also had conversations with the president of the Beth Israel Synagogue in our city to discuss the situation and local impacts. As a service, we are being vigilant and there will be heightened police presence at the synagogue here in Peterborough throughout the day,” said Stuart Betts, Chief of Police, Peterborough.
Our thoughts are with the officer who was shot during this incident while ensuring the safety of others in their community. We wish them a full and speedy recovery surrounded by family, friends, and colleagues.”
A Belleville police officer remains in critical-stable condition while the other person is in life-threatening condition.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is now handling the case.
