Walk or run in memory of victims of impaired driving

The parents of two young ladies killed by an impaired driver near 8 Wing Trenton in 2021 want to keep their memory alive.

On Saturday, October 3, a one- or five-kilometre walk/run will be held beginning at Trenton’s Centennial Park in honour of Rebecca Beatty and Anastasia Collins.

They died in a head-on crash in October 5 years ago.

The second annual “Blizzard for the Girls” event will raise money for Belleville’s Children’s Safety Village and MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and MADD Quinte will unveil a memorial bench to Rebecca and Anastasia and all victims of impaired driving.

Just before the tragic collision they had purchased Blizzards from Dairy Queen.

Last year almost 100 people took part.

Connie Beatty, the mother of Rebecca, tells Quinte News why she and her husband, along with the Collins family and others, organized the walk.

“I don’t want them dying in vain. I want people to remember them and to remember that drinking and driving is tragic, it’s senseless and so preventable.”

Beatty went on to say, “I think we all want to go out occasionally and let loose but people need to be more cautious about their choices, to think twice about their actions. We need to think ahead and plan on how we will get home safely after partying. The collateral damage when impaired driving accidents happen is so tragic. It affects people for the rest of their lives.”

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with the walk/run starting around 10 o’clock.
