Derek Smith is the new head coach of the Cobourg Cougars.
The team announced their hiring decision earlier this week.
Smith has coached in the region for a long time, including stops with the Wellington Dukes and the Trenton Golden Hawks, where he won an OJHL championship with both teams.
The former NHLer (Ottawa Senators/Calgary Flames) and the G-Hawks parted ways in the spring and the Belleville native will take over a team that was recently relocated from Minden, where they were known as the Haliburton County Huskies.
The Cobourg Cougars of last season were relocated to Toronto.
