Jim Harrison says his community is in a good place and he’s ready to move on.
The longtime Quinte West mayor has confirmed he will not seek reelection this fall, capping off a career in municipal politics that began in 1991.
Harrison appeared on CJBQ’s Lorne Brooker Show on Tuesday morning.
“I have enjoyed the political career that I’ve had and enjoyed the people that I’ve had the privilege to work with.”
He believes it’s the right time for him to leave.
“I just think that I’ve worked hard, and I just feel it’s appropriate time. Things are in good shape, including us. Yes, we’ve got projects on the go, but we’ve got great people.”
Harrison, also a longtime educator and farmer, noted he could not have accomplished all he has without the support of his wife, Jane.
He’s been involved in municipal politics since 1991 and has spent the last 12 years as mayor.
He noted how particularly proud he is of having CFB Trenton in his community.
“It’s the people, the people that make the difference, and I so respect them, and I love the uniform, and I love the fact that they wear it proudly, because we are proud of them.”
So far, two people have put their names forward to run for the Quinte West’s top job, councillors Shelly Stedall and Zack Card.
