PHOTOS: Major overnight storm across Quinte region, southern Ontario

Thousands of people in the region were/are without power overnight (Wednesday night/Thursday morning), following several severe thunderstorms.

Social media is littered with photos and videos of downpours, heavy winds, downed trees and power lines, along with damage to property.

Hydro One reports hundreds of outages across southern Ontario and crews are working to restore power.

A farmer in Prince Edward County says fire crews had to be called after a round bail caught fire, thanks to a lightning bolt hitting one of his fields.

The City of Quinte West postponed their fireworks until Thursday evening.

According to The Weather Network, the Ottawa Airport recorded more than 110 millimetres of rain, while Pearson in Toronto recorded winds of more than 100 kilometres an hour.

It was another wild night in parts of the province for sure, especially in the Ottawa Valley. 126 mm of rain from thunderstorms, again around that so-called ring of fire we have been talking about where you have these clusters that form around high pressure. There could be another cluster of storms moving through parts of our region later this afternoon, this evening, and again tomorrow afternoon, either one of which could produce some strong winds, downpours on a localized basis. So do keep an eye on the sky as we continue to sit and stew in this tropical brew.”

Southern Ontario had 170,000 people without power at one time.

Reports indicate some people will not have their power restored until much later on Thursday.
