Belleville Police Service is celebrating its 190th anniversary today.
There is a flag-raising ceremony this afternoon at the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre and later a special event at police headquarters that will include tours.
That event is at capacity.
Speaking with the Mix Morning Crew on Thursday, Chief Murray Rodd says the service, founded in 1836, is one of the oldest in Canada.
“It’s considered the second oldest, second oldest in Ontario at least and among those in Canada. So yeah, it’s quite a thing to think that the founders decided, basically upon the birth of the community to add the police service to it at that time.”
190 Years of the Belleville Police Service is a special exhibit running until September 13 at Glanmore House featuring historic artifacts and exploring the evolution of policing in Belleville.
A self-guided downtown walking tour highlights former police headquarters with historic photos and interpretive panels.
Printed maps are available at the Community Policing Office (211 Front St.).
The walking tour will be available throughout 2026.
