The municipality of Brighton is moving forward with a potential twinning with another Brighton, this located in Monroe County, New York.
Council approved the move Monday, authorizing Mayor Brian Ostrander to enter into a twinning agreement with the Rochester area community.
Mayor Brian Ostrander says he began looking into twinning possibilities with American cities last year in hopes to foster goodwill, collaboration, and cultural exchange in light of current tensions between Canada and the U.S.
That included reaching out to all the Brightons across the United States.
He received an enthusiastic response from the town of almost 40,000.
Ostrander says the proximity between the communities is beneficial and he anticipates visits between the two.
He notes the libraries in each community already have a social media relationship.
There’s no timeline for completion of the twinning charter.
Last year Brighton council approved twinning with Anisy in France where a Brighton resident, Clarke Lawson, perished fighting in World War II.
