A proposal to reduce wastewater rates paid by certain Quinte West residents is getting another look.
During Wednesday’s meeting of Quinte West council, councillors heard a presentation from the Youngs Cove Community Association, regarding the rates homeowners in the community pay for wastewater service.
In their presentation, they detail how the community pays a much higher base rate for waste water services than the rest of Quinte West, calling the discrepancy unfair. The Youngs Cove development sits on a separate waste water system that serves only it’s area. Residents of the Youngs Cove development were shown to be paying $51 more on their baseline waste water charge than other properties receiving wastewater services.
The group also raised concerns that they were not given notice that a previous proposal to address their elevated waste water rates was up for discussion in a previous meeting of council, and that many disparaging remarks were allowed to be made during that meeting towards the people living in the Youngs Cove development.
After the presentation, council began a brief discussion. Councillor Jim Alyea said he was in support of revisiting the issue.
“Some of the comments were insulting and not fair at the last meeting, and not accurate, that is for sure,” said Councillor Alyea. “There needs to be more background information brought out to the public that commented that night.”
After some discussion among councillors, municipal staff were directed to prepare a report to council with additional details about the wastewater system in the Youngs Cove community. That report will come before council at a future meeting.
