Quinte West is making some improvements to a local park.
During Wednesday’s council meeting, council received a report on plans to update Brett Park, located on Nicholas Street.
Municipal staff previously met with a local resident, Doris Scott, who offered to make a $50,000 contribution to improvements to the park in the name of her late husband Austin Scott in order to facilitate a series of improvements to the park. The donor and staff identified several priorities for improvement within the park, including upgrading the children’s play structure, installing new seating, planting larger shade trees, and installing a small perennial garden beneath the park sign.
It was determined by staff that most of these can be done with the provided donation, but installing a new play structure would take additional funding.
The report recommended council fund the improvements with an additional $85,000, drawn from capital reserves, along with accepting the donation to improve the park. This would require an amendment to the budget to account for the new spending.
Council voted to approve the plan, and amend the budget accordingly after brief debate.
